Betting On Horse Races

Growing up, I never saw a horse trail or saw a horse race.

That all changed when I married into a horse race-loving family and met Kim. John, my father-in-law, had begun going to the racetrack as a teenager with his family. This was a time before lotteries and casinos, so it was something to do and to go and horse racing was the only legal form of gambling. His family lived in Connecticut but had bought a small home in Woodford, Vermont, and Rick’s dad loved to take the wife and children just a little ways south of there. Grandpa John would take everyone’s orders, and they’d set up their lawn chairs by the finish line and relay the stakes to the tellers.

When I started dating kim, one of our first and most amorous dates was when she took me to the racetrack here in Tulsa. We had an excellent time betting on horse races while snuggling from the bleachers as a thunderstorm rolled in.

Her parents would take us to horse races each summer or so and even gave us bad newlyweds a tiny scratch after Kim and I got hitched. Gram John– every inch the Italian grandma — still loved to go and bet just as she had in the old days in Vermont, although Rick’s father had long since passed away.

I really enjoyed these outings with my extended family and placing a few bets myself, but I had no clue what I did. The horses were mainly picked by me together with the names I liked.

So i jumped at the chance America’s Best Racing provided me a few months ago to come see the Spiral Stakes and get some lessons. Kim and I learned a ton and I had an excellent time. Betting on horses is much more complicated than i had imagined, but it is really a great deal of fun.

Now, i’ll share some of the basics of what I learned, so that the horse racing newcomer can benefit from this wonderful spring weather and return to their local racetrack (or the Kentucky Derby!) feeling like they know what they’re doing.

Let’s discuss why you would want to visit a horse racetrack before we get into the art of betting. Maybe you’re thinking, “That is something my grandpa liked to do, but i am not interested.”

Watching horse racing at the levels of the sport is a wonderful experience. In losing my shorts in some dark 29, I’m really not much for any other types of gaming and personally don’t see the pleasure. But horse like; it feels like amusement, an experience, an outing. I like that I am outside. I like that there is a lot of tradition and history behind it. All in all, whether I lose or win money, I still have a great time.

These days if you would like to take the family to a professional basketball or soccer game, $400 cans easily run you. Entry to a racetrack is often free, the minimum bet on every horse race is only $2 and you can bring your own food and drinks. You get to spend all afternoon and evening outside, watching animals perform at their peak ability. And this can run you less than a trip to the movies.

And if you’re looking for a unique date, where you won’t run out of things to talk about, look no further! Kinds of Horse Racing Bets with lots of history there it’s the oldest sporting venue of any kind in the United States.

You’ve got two categories of wagers to pick from when you bet on the ponies: straight wagers and exotic wagers. For a novice, I suggest sticking with straight wagers. They’re cheap and simple. You pick 1 horse to come in first, second, or third. The minimum bet at most tracks for a wager is just $2.

Wagers allow you to make bets on multiple horses in one wager. Wagers are somewhat more expensive, require an advanced degree in horse choosing of knowledge and skill and are much more difficult to win than wagers. The payoffs on wagers are greater than ones.

Straight Wagers

Remember with a straight bet, you simply bet on one horse.

Exotic Wagers Exotic wagers allow you to bet on multiple horses in a single bet, allowing you to increase your profit potential. But as i mentioned previously, they are much harder to win than bets, need skill in handicapping horses, and can get pricey if you’re not careful. Feel free to experiment with a few exotic wagers after you have done a few bets.

EXACTA-– You are betting to come in first and second. By way of example, if a $ 2 exacta was put by you on horses 3 and 5, you can collect if horse # 3 comes in first and horse #5 comes in second. Since the payoff can be extremely lucrative, exact bets are popular amongst horse handicappers. You may also “box” your exact bet  which means your two horses can come in any order in the top two spots and you still win. Boxing an exacta costs twice as much as a direct exacta bet. So a $2 box exacta on horses 3 and 5 will cost you $4.

QUINELLA– Using a quinella bet, you are betting on two horses to come in first and second. You win. Therefore, if you placed a quinella bet you can collect if horse #1 and horse #6 come in first and second. You may be thinking, “What’s the difference between a quinella and a box exacta? Both allow you to win if your two horses come in first or
second.” The big difference is cost. If it is the exact same bet as a quinella, why would someone pay more for a box exacta? The payout for a box exacta is greater than a quinella bet, that’s why.

TRIFECTA-– You bet that three horses will finish in first, second and third in a specific order. You can collect if horse # 1 comes in first, horse comes in second if you place a trifecta bet on 1-5-7 horse #7 comes in third. You can also box your trifecta bet so you can win if your three horses come in first, second, and third in any order. As there are lots of combinations the price of your bet wills increase. So a box trifecta wager will cost you $12 or a trifecta boxed will cost you $6.

SUPERFECTA– You bet that four horses will complete, first, third, second and fourth in an exact order. As with exactas and trifectas, you can box a superfecta. The bet is often 10-cents, which makes it more appealing to people. I’m not going to get into “keying” horses with these exotic bets. That’s a little bit too complex for our purposes here. Basically, keying horses permits you to minimize your wager, while raising your payout if you pick on your horses. It’s something that I’d look into as soon as you get handicapping horses that are comfortable .
